Non-Canonical Groups

Sadly, some groups that use the traditional Roman liturgy are not in regular canonical standing in the Catholic Church. Most of them left the Church over modern changes related to the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and the new order of Mass (1969).

From the point of view of the Catholic Church, those separated bodies with validly ordained priests generally have valid Masses; but in most cases these illicit Masses do not fulfil the Sunday obligation, and other sacraments such as Penance and Matrimony may be invalid due to a lack of jurisdiction.

Listed below are some of the better-known separated traditionalist groups. The use of clerical titles (Bp. for Bishop; Fr. for Father) signifies their self-identification and not necessarily their recognition as such by the Catholic Church (though some are indeed recognized by the Church as valid bishops and priests, such as those of the Orthodox, for example, and the SSPX).

    Disobedient (unauthorized ordinations)
See Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Letter <Ecclesia Dei>. for details. Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication, but their clergy are still suspended from ministry (suspensio a divinis).

  • Society of St. Pius V (S.S.P.V.)
    Oyster Bay Cove, NY
Bp. Clarence Kelly (consecrated by Bp. Alfredo Méndez-Gonzalez)

Old Catholics

associated with various bodies called the "Old Catholic Church," many of them originating from dissent from the First Vatican Council (1868-1870) over the definition of papal infallibility. Not all "Old Catholics" use the Traditional Mass, nor do they all share the same views. Some, for example, have female clergy.

the use of a modified form of the Traditional Mass by separated Eastern Christians such as the Antiochian Orthodox (part of the Eastern Orthodox communion).
